Framework

Six capabilities AI can't replace, and most leaders have forgotten they have.

The world's getting more complex, and that calls for contextual sensemaking and judgement, not more task execution skills. Powerskills are six innately human capacities for navigating that, made teachable and measurable.

Powerskills framework
01 — The Context

Why this, why now

Some problems are complicated: the relationship between cause and effect takes analysis or expert knowledge to see, but it's there to be found. Others are complex: cause and effect can only be understood in retrospect, and the right move is to probe, sense, and respond, not to plan and execute. Treating a complex problem like a complicated one, or vice versa, is how good teams waste good effort.

AI can predict and pattern-match. Only humans carry context, choose trade-offs, and steward consequences. That's the edge. We haven't lost it. We've mostly just forgotten we have it.

Navigating context and complexity
02 — Three Tensions

What shapes modern work

Modality

Can you spot shifts early and adapt without chaos, or do you lurch from surprise to surprise?

Horizon

Are you protecting long-term bets, or letting short-term bumps quietly cannibalise the future?

Move

Are you pushing for results in ways that build capacity, or burning through the system that delivers them?

03 — The Six Domains

Smart moves, innately human

Each domain has named microskills, small, specific behaviours that make the capability teachable and measurable. Instead of "be decisive," you name the domain and pick the matching first move.

Self Mastery

Know your inner compass. Notice your patterns, honour your values, lead from within.

Decision quality improves when the decider is steady. Identity, emotion, and story turned into practice. A reflection skill that serves performance, not just wellness.

Why it matters: Less reactivity, clearer intent, cleaner calls under pressure.

Microskills: anchor awareness, reflective reframing, ethical grounding, w.i.p. mindset, depth discipline, narrative integrity.

Tiny drill (2 min): Before a hard call, say: "My intent is to help X achieve Y without Z." Read once, then act.

Relational Fluency

Connect with depth. Listen with care, speak with intent, grow through others.

We operate in social contexts, navigating relationships. Doing that effectively means going beyond the transactional, to building trust, understanding, respect, and generosity.

Why it matters: The room is a system. Navigate it with purpose and the hard work gets doable.

Microskills: power/status literacy, boundary signals, generous challenge, repair moves, high-friction listening, conversation design.

Tiny drill (2 min): Open your next meeting with scope, limits, and decision rights. Watch the noise drop.

Contextual Sensemaking

Sense the spaces, see the signals, navigate with purpose.

Read the terrain before you move. Distinguish complicated from complex or chaotic, so you don't over-control the uncertain or over-analyse the obvious.

Why it matters: Wrong-fit methods, like plans where probes belong, waste time.

Microskills: domain diagnosis, narrative radar, incentive/constraint/shadow mapping, signal triage, threshold sensing.

Tiny drill (2 min): Tag your next decision complicated or complex. If complex, start with a small probe, not a plan.

Agency in Complexity

Sense the systems, find leverage, take the smallest next step.

Change systems with smart levers and reversible bets. Diagnose the system, choose leverage points, and protect learning through fast feedback and safe-to-try moves.

Why it matters: Big pushes often stall. Small, well-placed moves shift outcomes faster.

Microskills: leverage-point spotting, smallest next step, probe-sense-respond, decision theatre, constraint design, feedback-loop wiring, risk framing.

Tiny drill (2 min): Convert one initiative into a 1-week reversible probe with clear kill criteria.

Adaptive Intelligence

Filter the noise, shift the lens, adapt in stride.

Think clearly, switch lenses, and choose the right tool, manual, spreadsheet, or AI, for the job. Filter noise, frame problems, and blend human and technology without the hype.

Why it matters: You stop wrestling tools and start making progress.

Microskills: tool-choice triad, frame-shifting, cognitive budgeting, human-AI co-working, knowledge curation, fast reflection.

Tiny drill (2 min): Write the same choice from four lenses: customer, system, cost, ethics. Notice what changes.

Temporal Wisdom

Walk backward into the future. Act with legacy in mind.

Act with the right relationship to time. Carry past lessons, scan the present, weigh future consequences. Choose pace on purpose and treat stewardship as part of decision quality.

Why it matters: Fewer quarter wins that become year losses. Better compounding over years.

Microskills: horizon toggling, slow-decision protocol, legacy lens, reversibility bias, seasonal cadence.

Tiny drill (2 min): Add "+7 years: who benefits, who pays?" to your next decision memo, and adjust one choice.
